What is a Sore Throat?

A sore throat is pain, scratchiness, or irritation of the throat that often worsens when you swallow. The main symptom of a sore throat is pain that can range from mild to severe. A sore throat is usually caused by a virus and will often get better on its own. However, some sore throats are caused by bacteria and may require antibiotics. You may also have a fever, chills, cough, runny nose, sneezing, headache, hoarseness, muscle and joint aches, nausea, and vomiting.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

The vast majority of sore throats are caused by a viral infection, typically related to the common cold or flu. However, there are also a number of bacterial infections that can lead to a sore throat, including strep throat, tonsillitis, whooping cough and diphtheria. In addition, other potential causes of a sore throat include allergies, acid reflux, environmental irritants, dry air, and strained vocal cords.

How do you Treat and Prevent a Sore Throat?

There are a number of things you can do to treat a sore throat and keep it from coming back. Gargling with warm salt water is one of the most effective home remedies. You can do this several times a day to help relieve pain and irritation. Drinking plenty of fluids will also help keep your throat moist and reduce discomfort. Throat lozenges and cough drops can also be helpful.

If your sore throat is due to a bacterial infection, you’ll need to take antibiotics. Over-the-counter pain relievers and decongestants can also be helpful in reducing symptoms.

To reduce your risk of developing a sore throat in the future, practice good hygiene. Wash your hands regularly and avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you do get sick, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading the illness to others.

For chronic or persistent sore throats that may be caused by other underlying conditions such as allergies, our team at Texas ENT & Allergy can help diagnose and identify the treatment that’s right for you.
