08.17.09 Cochlear Implant Surgery Performed in Bryan-College Station PDF Print E-mail

On August 14, 2009, Andrew L. de Jong, M.D. of Texas ENT and Allergy successfully performed two Cochlear Implant surgeries at the College Station Medical Center in College Station, Texas.

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that restores partial hearing to the deaf. It is surgically implanted in the inner ear and activated by a device worn outside the ear. Unlike a hearing aid, it does not make sound louder or clearer. Instead, the device bypasses damaged parts of the auditory system and directly stimulates the nerve of hearing, allowing individuals who are profoundly hearing impaired to receive sound.

Dr. de Jong has spent time studying Pediatric Cochlear Implants at the Bionic Ear Institute at the University of Melbourne in Australia and initiated the Cochlear Implant program at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

Dr. de Jong is a board certified Otolaryngologist and has practiced in Bryan College Station since 1999.  He attended Texas A & M University for his undergraduate degree and Baylor College of Medicine for medical school. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas which included service at the Methodist Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, Ben Taub General Hospital and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Hospital for Sick Children at the University of Toronto School of Medicine.
